{"id":8,"date":"2013-02-23T13:08:48","date_gmt":"2013-02-23T13:08:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/longdistancededications.com\/blog\/?p=8"},"modified":"2013-02-23T13:10:42","modified_gmt":"2013-02-23T13:10:42","slug":"8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/longdistancededications.com\/blog\/?p=8","title":{"rendered":"And so, it begins&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='kindleWidget kindleLight' ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/longdistancededications.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/send-to-kindle\/media\/white-15.png\" \/><span>Send to Kindle<\/span><\/div><p><em>Long-Distance Dedications,\u00a0<\/em>as a book, is a relatively new idea (maybe a year \u00a0in the planning, so far), but some of the stories within it are already over 20 years old. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hackettstown-A-Short-Story-ebook\/dp\/B0070NFVHC\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1361624513&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=brian+hartman+hackettstown\">&#8220;Hackettstown&#8221;<\/a>, for example, was written when I was around 18, and in all likelihood, I will be including a story I wrote when I was in high school. \u00a0The title right now is &#8220;Waiting for the Weekend&#8221;, but that&#8217;s subject to change, because I might revise the story to be about something else.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things I have to do is figure out what&#8217;s in and what&#8217;s out. \u00a0There are certain Dave Riggler stories that just won&#8217;t make the cut. \u00a0One example is <a href=\"http:\/\/writing.wikinut.com\/Hit-and-Roll\/1.d2mlum\/\">&#8220;Hit and Roll&#8221;<\/a>, which I wrote for a site called Wikinut, to try my hand at paid Web content creation. \u00a0Essentially, it&#8217;s an excerpt from &#8220;Hackettstown&#8221;, with a few of the details changed. \u00a0If you want to get a feel for the writing style (but not the plot) of &#8220;Hackettstown&#8221;, I suggest you check out &#8220;Hit and Roll&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Story order in\u00a0<em>Long-Distance Dedications\u00a0<\/em>is something I decided on almost immediately. \u00a0It&#8217;s going to go in chronological order. \u00a0So far, the earliest story in the book is &#8220;The Borrowing Contract&#8221;, so that will be first. \u00a0And the latest story that I&#8217;ve written so far is &#8220;Rolled&#8221;, but the last story (so far, untitled) has not been written yet.<\/p>\n<p>The first story I wrote\u00a0<em>specifically\u00a0<\/em>for the book was<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Shall-Healed-Short-Story-ebook\/dp\/B008ZEDQX6\/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1361624857&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=brian+hartman+and+ye+shall+be+healed\"> &#8220;And Ye Shall Be Healed&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0Initially, the title had been &#8220;&#8230;And Ye Shall Be Healed&#8221;, but I dropped the\u00a0ellipses when I submitted for the first time to a magazine. \u00a0To be honest, I&#8217;m still not 100% sold on that decision. \u00a0I might change that for the book.<\/p>\n<p>That brings me to another issue: \u00a0The stories in the book will be slightly different from the versions that have been published in magazines. \u00a0&#8220;Rolled&#8221;, which will be published by <em>Empirical Magazine<\/em> in April, will have a dedication in the book, and will have another minor change. \u00a0&#8220;Leaving the Union&#8221;, which I published through Amazon on Kindle, will have a few minor edits. \u00a0And, if I&#8217;m lucky and &#8220;The Fight&#8221;
